Slovak Air Force again both on static and dynamic display
First participant of the upcoming NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days traditionally confirm their displays shortly after New Year. This year is no exception, its participation announced the Slovak Air Force that is sending its equipment both on dynamic and static display.
Fighter jet MiG-29 is to show its manoeuvrability, but in case it will not be able to participate for any reasons, L-39 Albatros will replace it. Transport helicopter Mi-17 will be stationed at the ground display, and it will serve as a support aircraft as well.
“It is quite symbolic that it is Slovakia, the country that shares with us a common history and also extensive security cooperation, that provides this year’s first confirmed display of the event,” says Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000 Association. “Presentation of MiG-29 aircraft was cancelled last year, so after many years we could not offer the type neither on static or dynamic display, so we are glad that visitors can look forward its participation now.”
Twin-engine air superiority fighters MiG-29 are the backbone of the Slovak Air Force. It was developed in 1970’s, however is still actively used by many air forces, primarily from the former Soviet bloc. Slovak aircraft were modernized to NATO standards in 2005-2006 and will be in service at least till 2019, although their replacement by JAS-39 Gripens is considered.
On the contrary, all Mi-17 helicopters will be replaced by the same year for new US-made UH-60 Black Hawks. That is why NATO Days visitors will have one of the last opportunities to see this helicopter with Slovak markings at static display.
