The Military History Institute will demonstrate an assault gun

27.08.2022, 12:30

The Military History Institute is also a regular participant of the NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. This year, it prepared for visitors a demonstration of the Sav m/43 assault gun.

The Swedish company Scania-Vabis started producing Sav m/43 assault guns in 1944 for the needs of the Swedish Royal Army. The advantage of this type of equipment over a tank is its structural simplicity and cheaper production because the chassis of an unused tank can be used to make an assault gun. And precisely the chassis of the Czechoslovak tank LT vz. 38 were used for the manufacture of the Sav m/43.

"The Sav m/43 assault gun is an example of the defence cooperation between Sweden and the former Czechoslovakia which took place between the world wars, to a limited extent during the Cold War, and which continues till these days not only in the form of JAS-39 Gripen aircraft," says Zbyněk Pavlačík, chairman of Jagello 2000.

The Sav m/43 was produced on the chassis of the Swedish Strv m/41 light tank which was a licensed version of the LT vz. 38. The crew of the machine consisted of four men. In the years 1944-1947, 36 pieces were produced, and the Swedish army had them in service until 1973. The Military History Institute acquired it for its collections as a part of the exchange of equipment with Sweden.
