Spain to boost Typhoon force at NATO Days
Even if the 15th anniversary NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days is adorned by the perfectly clear skies, three “typhoons” will be raging the area surrounding the Mošnov airport. Fortunately, the noise and the flying action will be provided by the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft, not by the severe weather. Joining the previously announced dynamic displays by the Italian and Austrian Air Forces, Spanish Air Force is sending one of their Typhoons as well.
Spain is the last of the Eurofighter Typhoon European operators that has not presented the type at Ostrava so far. Symbolically, after nine years, the Spain’s presentation will complete the circle of the Typhoon presentations by the programme countries, started back in 2007 with the type’s static park debut by the Royal Air Force.
“Spanish Air Force has made unforgettable impressions at NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days, primarily thanks to presentations of its aerobatics teams – the Patrulla Águilla in 2008 and the Patrulla ASPA in 2013. In 2007, Spanish Air Force F-18 Hornet display was one of the highlights of the show already. We are looking forward to seeing the Spanish Typhoon’s similarly powerful presentation this year,” comments Zbyněk Pavlačík, head of Jagello 2000, the main organizing agency. “The competition, including two other Typhoons, is really tough this year and promises really attractive display ‘duels’”.

Spain has ordered 87 Typhoons and has taken delivery of 61 so far. Two aircraft have been lost in accidents. The biggest Typhoon fleet is that of the UK’s Royal Air Force with as many as 160 aircraft. Apart from five European operators (Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK), the Typhoons fly in the Air Forces of Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Last time the NATO Days visitors had a chance to see a Typhoon in the air was in 2013, in a display by the Austrian Air Force. Since then, the aircraft could be seen in the static park in the colours of German Luftwaffe.
