Giant planes, fighters and helicopters: the Luftwaffe to present itself in the air and on the ground

13.06.2024, 19:26

The German Air Force is preparing a spectacular presentation of its equipment for this year's NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. As part of the presentation of the special partner nation, Germany will also offer a premiere static display of the international tanker A330 MRTT.

Along with it, giant A400M Atlas transport aircraft, Eurofighter and Tornado combat aircraft, H-145 helicopters, and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will be presented at the Mošnov airport. In the case of the Atlas, Eurofighter, and H-145, visitors can also look forward to dynamic displays.

"Germany has traditionally taken the presentation of its armed forces in a grand style, but thanks to the role of a partner nation, it managed to take it to the next level. We are also very much looking forward to the A330 MRTT tanker from the international squadron, which has already appeared here twice in the opening flight, but now we will be able to see it up close for the first time, and the Czech crew members will be able to answer the visitors' questions," says Zbyněk Pavlačík, chairman of Jagello 2000, the main organizer of the event. "In addition to this, we can announce three dynamic displays, and further dynamic displays on the ground or in the air by the German navy and ground forces are also being discussed."

The multi-purpose transport and refuelling aircraft A330 MRTT produced by Airbus falls under the multinational squadron of six NATO member states, including Germany and the Czech Republic, and is owned directly by NATO. The purpose of this squadron is to create a common European capacity for transporting cargo and refuelling aircraft in the air, and is thus a representative example of international defence cooperation. Its main base of operations is in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. However, it also has an advanced and exclusively German base in Cologne. Here as well, another A330 MRTT aircraft is permanently on standby for MEDEVAC.

This also applies to the A400M, Eurofighter, and Tornado aircraft, which were or are being developed and manufactured in European cooperation. The latest of these is the A400M Atlas four-engine turboprop tactical transport aircraft, whose capabilities include operating from short and unpaved areas, and in addition to transporting material, it can also serve as an aerial tanker.

It can also deliver fuel to Eurofighter machines, which will thus enable missions to be extended. This fourth-generation twin-engine combat aircraft was originally developed for airspace protection, but gradually gained the ability to perform a wider range of missions, including attacks on ground targets.

These, on the other hand, were the primary purpose of the Tornado aircraft, which are designed to penetrate enemy defences at low altitudes, which is helped by the variable geometry of the wings. Compared to Eurofighters, they can be armed with nuclear ammunition.

The H145M helicopter is used by the German armed forces for special operations, also thanks to the fact that it is one of the quietest helicopters in its class.
